::Chemical Peels Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to "blister" and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.

What Can a Chemical Peel Do?
Chemical peeling is often used to treat fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth. Wrinkles caused by sun damaged, aging, and hereditary factors can often be reduced or even eliminated with this procedure. However, sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond well to peeling and may require other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures, such as a face lift, brow life, eye lift, or soft tissue filler. The most appropriate type of treatment for each individual case will be determined.

What Can be Treated with Chemical Peels?
Mild scarring and certain types of acne can be treated with chemical peels. In addition, pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, and splotching due to taking birth control pills, as well as skin that Is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical peeling. The procedure can be preformed on the face neck and hands. Areas of sun damaged, or precancerous keratoses or scaling patches may improve after chemical peeling. Following treatment, new lesions or patches are less likely to appear.

How are Chemical Peels Performed?
Prior to surgery, instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs and the preparation of the skin with topical preconditioning medications. The patient may be advised to clean the area with an antiseptic soap the day before surgery. A chemical peel can be performed in a doctor's office or in a surgery center as an out patient procedure. The skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils, and the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical solutions are used. Dermatologic surgeons are well qualified to select the proper peeling agent based upon the type of skin damage present. During a chemical peel, the physician applies a solution to small areas of the skin. These applications produce a controlled wound enabling new, regenerated skin to appear. During the procedure, many patients experience a warm somewhat hot sensation which last about 5 to 10 minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. A deeper peel may require pain medication during or after the procedure.

What Should Be Expected After Treatment?
Depending upon the type of peel, a reaction similar to a sunburn occurs following a chemical peel. Superficial peeling usually involves redness, followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days. Medium-depth and deep peeling may result in swelling and the presence of water blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of 7 to 14 days. Some peels may require bandages to be placed on part or all of the skin that is treated. Bandages are usually removed in several days and may improve the effectiveness of the treatment. It is important to avoid overexposure to the sun after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to complications. The dermatological surgeon will prescribe the proper follow-up care to reduce the tendency to develop abnormal skin color after peeling.

Laser Hair Removal A low-energy, non-invasive laser generates intense, long-pulsed light which disables unwanted pigmented hair follicles and impairs their growth. When the light penetrates the skin, it selectively damages the dark cells (melanocytes) in the unwanted hair root . Laser treatment leaves your skin looking and feeling smoother and silkier.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area treated, the hair density, and your hair's growth cycle. Hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication, and metabolism all play a part in your hair's location, thickness, and resilience.

What Are the Laser Treatments Like?
Laser hair removal is a gentle three-step process. First, the area to be treated is cleansed, then it is shaved. Next the area is scanned with the laser. The laser energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. In a fraction of a second, all of the treated hair follicles are disabled.

Does skin color make a difference?
Patients with fairer skin respond the best, but the newest lasers are able to treat almost all skin types. The lasers are limited to only dark hair removal, however.

How Is Laser Hair Removal Different From Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is much slower, as a needle must be inserted into each individual hair follicle, one at a time. Once inserted an electric shock burns the follicle to retard hair growth. Laser hair removal uses the cool light of the laser to scan the treatment area and within minutes all the hairs in the laser's beam are treated. Laser hair removal is less painful, faster, and more convenient, leaving you with smoother, silkier skin in minutes.
