BOTOX® Cosmetic is indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people 18 to 65 years of age.

How Does Botox Help Achieve Smooth, Youthful Skin? Botox blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expressions lines. Botox relaxes the muscles so they do not contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. Thus worry lines, laugh lines, crow's feet, and other dynamic wrinkles are dramatically softened.

What Is the Treatment Like? Botox is a simple and safe procedure. Using a very fine needle, a small amount of Botox is injected very precisely. The sensation is often compared to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthesia is needed. You can resume normal activities immediately, including driving yourself home or back to the office.

Are There Side Effects? Occasionally, temporary bruising at the injection site may be experienced, but this can be covered with makeup. In rare cases asymmetry of facial muscles occurs, but this is only temporary and will be discussed with you before your treatment. As the effects of Botox are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only a few weeks.

What are the Limitations? Unfortunately, Botox injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles, the effects lasting from three to six months. However clinical studies show that the longer you have injections, the longer they will last. Also, the duration of effect varies from patient to patient and may be less effective for those over 65 years of age.

What Results Can I Expect? If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, the procedure using Botox injections can smooth these out and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. However, this procedure cannot improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. Botox injections will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a facelift or brow lift.

::SCLEROTHERAPY Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat spider veins of the legs. Using a syringe with a tiny needle, the doctors inject a small amount of a hypertonic saline solution directly into the spider veins causing injury inside the unwanted vessels. Following the injections, patients wear compression stockings in order to compress the treated veins. The blood becomes trapped in the injected veins. The body then gradually absorbs the trapped blood, and the vein disappears over a 3 -4 week period. Often 2-3 treatment sessions are required to achieve a 90% or better clearing of the spider veins. The treatments although moderately uncomfortable are very safe and effective.

Are There Any Medications That Can Be Prescibed To Improve My Skin? There are several steps that you can take to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin. The first is the use of retinoid products that have been shown to improve the appearance of solar damaged skin. There are now many types of retinoids that cause less irritation than the old products. They are most often used at night before bed. Alpha hydroxy acid products are also helpful in treating aged skin. There are many cleansers and creams that can be used once or twice daily. They actually thicken the skin and remove old damaged skin. Antioxidant creams that contain substances similar to vitamin E can be used. They often work well around the eye. And finally, it is important to find a sunscreen that you can wear every day. Many are now available that can be worn beneath makeup. There are also makeup products available that contain sunscreen.
